2023-2025- Restoring Balance in the DOCa Rioja
A comprehensive plan was launched to optimize vineyard production control, strengthen quality controls, reduce bureaucratic burdens, and increase marketing funds. At this time, sustainability becomes a top priority in Rioja.

Rioja aims to lead the wine industry in sustainability, setting out to become the “greenest” wine region in the world, highlighting the DO, improving consumer perception, and positively impacting the Rioja DOCa region. To achieve this, a series of aspirational goals and initiatives have been set to reinforce the position of DOCa Rioja within the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Rioja’s SDGs
- Reduce pesticide use by 50%.
- Reduce the carbon footprint by 10%.
- Achieve 5% organic and sustainably sourced wines.
To accomplish these goals, beyond the initiatives aligned with the SDGs, Rioja will use two key levers: awareness and incentivization.

The Denomination will conduct awareness-raising efforts for growers and winemakers to explain the benefits of adopting a sustainable approach, aligning interests and visions. This comprehensive approach to sustainability presents differential aspects in its methodology, development, and in addressing subsequent results, paving the way for an even more eco-friendly Rioja.
